"Building Tomorrow Together"
Japanese drive leader; US HQ in Chesapeake, VA; Cyclo® gear reducers and smartris AGV/AMR integrated drives for industrial automation worldwide.
Sumitomo Drive Technologies is the global brand name for the power transmission and drive division of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (SHI), a Tokyo-based industrial conglomerate whose origins trace to 1691. The Cyclo® speed reducer, invented by SHI in 1925, remains the product that defines the company's technical identity. US operations are conducted by Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America (SMCA), headquartered at 4200 Holland Boulevard, Chesapeake, Virginia 23323. The Chesapeake facility broke ground in 1988 and achieved ISO 9001 certification in 1996 and ISO 14001 in 2009.
The company's flagship product line is the CYCLO Drive gear reducer, which uses an epitrochoid parallel-curve cycloid disc rather than involute gear teeth. This design enables a single-stage reduction ratio range of 6:1 to 119:1, a momentary shock-load capacity of 500% rated torque, virtually zero backlash over the product's lifetime, and minimal vibration — properties especially valued in AGV wheel drives and robot joints subject to stop-start and impact loads. The Cyclo® 6000 and BBB (Big, Bold, Better) series are widely used in conveyor and material-handling applications.
For AGV and AMR markets, Sumitomo offers the smartris integrated drive system: a single compact unit combining a Cyclo gear reducer, servo motor, and servo amplifier specifically engineered for mobile robot wheel drives. The smartris operates at up to 2.0 m/s and 1.0 m/s² acceleration, with multiple gear-ratio and payload configurations to cover light AMRs through heavy-duty AGVs.
Additional product families include the Fine Cyclo® zero-backlash precision reducer (single- and double-stage) for robot joint and indexing applications; Paramax® right-angle helical-bevel gearmotors; and HF/HVF helical inline gearmotors. The company also supplies variable frequency drives (VFDs) and motion-control solutions. With manufacturing in Japan, the US, Germany, and China, and sales offices across more than 50 countries, Sumitomo Drive Technologies serves customers in food and beverage, packaging, mining, cement, material handling, and robotics industries worldwide.
