"From Deep Sea to Deep Space"
San Antonio, Texas nonprofit R&D institute founded 1947; hosts the ROS-Industrial Consortium and builds industrial robots and autonomous vehicle systems.
Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is an independent, nonprofit contract research and development organization headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. It was founded in 1947 by Thomas Baker Slick Jr. on land from his family's South Texas ranch and has grown into a multidisciplinary organization serving government and industry clients.
SwRI's robotics work spans more than three decades and covers industrial automation, small tactical ground and aerial robots, driverless vehicle systems, and machine vision for robot guidance, process control, and inspection. Engineering teams have built large custom industrial robots and mobile systems, including robots that strip coatings from commercial aircraft using laser ablation. SwRI founded the ROS-Industrial Consortium, an open-source initiative that applies the Robot Operating System to manufacturing tasks such as sanding, painting, grinding, food processing, inspection, inkjet printing, and bin picking; the consortium is now co-managed with Fraunhofer IPA in Stuttgart and the Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre in Singapore.
The institute maintains a dedicated robotics program covering industrial, defense, autonomous-vehicle, and medical robotics work and is a member of the Association for Advancing Automation. SwRI's main campus is located at 6220 Culebra Road in San Antonio.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
Open-source ROS software framework for industrial robotics and automation applications.
Custom robotic cells for sanding, grinding, painting and deburring processes.
Sensing and perception systems for robotic bin picking and cluttered-object sorting.
