Soil Machine Dynamics Ltd (SMD) is a British subsea engineering company founded on 25 October 1971 and headquartered at Turbinia Works in Wallsend, on the River Tyne near Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The company designs, manufactures and deploys remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and other subsea equipment for offshore energy, telecommunications and marine-engineering customers. In April 2015, SMD was acquired for roughly £130 million by Zhuzhou CSR Times Electric (now Zhuzhou CRRC Times Electric Co., Ltd.), a subsidiary of Chinese state-owned rail manufacturer CRRC Corporation Limited; SMD continues to operate from its Wallsend facility, which the acquisition designated as the global headquarters for the parent group's deepwater-equipment business.
SMD's work-class ROV range includes the Atom (4,000 msw depth rating, 100 hp/75 kW, 150 kg payload, 2,000 kg system weight), Quasar (4,000 msw, 150 hp/110 kW, 250 kg payload, 3,500 kg) and Quantum (4,000 msw, 250 hp/186 kW, 350 kg payload, 5,000 kg), alongside all-electric variants Atom EV (6,000 msw depth rating, 100 kW, 150 kg payload, 2,600 kg) and Quantum EV (6,000 msw, 200 kW, 350 kg payload, 4,500 kg). Beyond ROVs, SMD's product lines include subsea trenching systems for telecoms and power cables (ploughs and trenchers for soft and hard ground), the Artemis cable-tracking system, launch-and-recovery systems, remote operating centres, training simulators and mining/minerals-handling equipment.
The company holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications and describes more than 50 years of experience in subsea engineering. Its equipment is used across offshore oil and gas, submarine cable installation and offshore renewables markets, where deepwater trenching, cable burial and ROV intervention work is required. As a subsidiary of a Chinese state-owned parent, SMD's UK operations continue to design and build its ROV and trenching product lines independently under the SMD brand. SMD's training simulators and remote operating centre products further support customers who operate ROV fleets from shore-based control rooms rather than solely from vessels.
