Geneva-based SITA's innovation arm founded 2008; runs 80+ co-innovation projects in aviation biometrics and AI, producing 12 SITA products and 20+ startups.
SITA Lab is the innovation unit of SITA, a Geneva-headquartered air transport IT provider founded in 1949 and owned as a cooperative by roughly 400 airline and airport members. Established in 2008, SITA Lab investigates technologies on a three-to-five-year horizon for SITA's airline, airport, and government customers, alongside SITA's product teams, which handle nearer-term deployments.
SITA Lab's focus areas include biometric identity verification, computer vision and AI for baggage and turnaround operations, blockchain-based digital credentials, digital twins for airport operations, and, more recently, urban air mobility and vertiport technology. Since founding, the lab has run more than 80 co-innovation projects with airlines, airports, governments, universities, and startups, contributing to 12 SITA product introductions and more than 20 startup incubations. Named proofs of concept include the Aruba Health Pass, a blockchain system that let travelers verify COVID-19 test results by QR code without exposing personal data, and a digital pilot license built with the International Civil Aviation Organization using a blockchain-backed wallet for offline verification.
SITA Lab has worked with partners including NEC on biometrics and the Sovrin Foundation on digital identity, feeding SITA's wider research program, into which SITA reports investing over 7.5 percent of revenue.
