Sherpa.ai is a Spanish artificial intelligence software company based in Erandio, in the Bizkaia province near Bilbao, with a second office in Silicon Valley. Founded by Xabi Uribe-Etxebarria, who remains CEO, the company originally built a predictive conversational assistant and has since repositioned around privacy-preserving AI for enterprises, governments and regulated sectors. Investors include Mundi Ventures and Apax Digital, and the board and advisory group include Siri co-founder Tom Gruber as Chief AI Strategy Officer.
The core product is the Sherpa.ai Platform, a federated learning system that trains machine learning models, large language models and multi-agent systems on data held by multiple parties without moving the raw data. Only encrypted model updates leave each site and are aggregated centrally, and models can also be deployed at the edge for on-device inference. The platform is sold for healthcare and life sciences, financial services fraud detection, industry and manufacturing, cybersecurity, and aerospace and defense, and the FENIX project applies it to semiconductor manufacturing optimization under Spain's PERTE Chip program.
Sherpa.ai is ISO 27001 certified and HIPAA compliant, and names NIH, KPMG, Telefonica, Orange, Zurich Insurance, Prosegur, Indra, Laboral Kutxa and Osakidetza among its customers. It was named European Scale-up of the Year 2024 at the III European AI Forum and an AI Breakthrough Awards winner in 2025.
