The Shadow Robot Company is a privately held British robotics manufacturer based in London that builds dexterous robot hands, tactile sensors and teleoperation systems for AI and machine-learning research and for remote work in hazardous, clean or distant environments. It has operated for more than two decades and does not sell its robots for military use.
The Shadow Dexterous Hand has 20 actuated degrees of freedom plus four under-actuated movements for 24 joints, driven by 20 DC motors through tendons. The 4.3 kg hand carries more than 100 sensors sampled at up to 1 kHz, including 40 tendon load sensors, an IMU and up to five Shadow Tactile Fingertips, and communicates over EtherCAT with full ROS integration. Lite variants reduce complexity: the Lite (13 DOF, 2.4 kg), Extra Lite (10 DOF, 2.1 kg) and Super Lite (7 DOF, 1.8 kg). DEX-EE, launched in May 2024 and developed with Google DeepMind, is a three-finger, 12 DOF hand weighing 4.1 kg with modular replaceable fingers, torque measurement throughout and optical fingertip sensors with hundreds of taxels per finger; a DEX-EE Chiral version followed. Teleoperation packages pair the hands with the Shadow Glove controller.
Named customers and collaborators include Amazon, Google DeepMind, NASA, GSK, Siemens, Honda, Qualcomm and MIT, plus sensing partners HaptX, SynTouch and Tangible Research.
