Ithaca, New York startup building an autonomous robot that kills weeds in specialty crops with low-energy pulsed electricity instead of herbicides.
Rootline Robotics, Inc. is an early-stage agricultural robotics company based in Ithaca, New York, developing autonomous, non-chemical weed control for specialty crops such as orchards and vineyards. Its robot navigates rows on its own, identifies weeds and treats them with a proprietary low-energy electrical treatment, described as pulsed electricity, that the company says is effective on hard-to-control weeds and safe for people, crops and soil. The system runs from an onboard battery and targets a narrow strip close to trunks, canes or stems without damaging the crop.
The company traces its origin to co-founder and CEO Andrew James, who has a background in digital agriculture and managed weed pressure on his family's organic apple orchard in New York; he found existing electric weeders expensive, dependent on very high voltages and still requiring a driver in every row. Co-founder and CPO Natalia Kurz leads the agronomic and biological basis of the electrical weed-suppression IP, and co-founder and CTO Alan Munschy leads engineering with a robotics and mechanical background. Rootline states that it plans to pilot the robot with a small group of California vineyards in spring 2027.
