Seongnam maker of capacitive 6-axis force/torque sensors (RFT40 to RFT80) for cobots, humanoids and medical robots, with 180+ customers in 25+ countries.
Robotous Co., Ltd. is a South Korean developer and manufacturer of six-axis force/torque sensors for robots, with its headquarters and factory in Bundang Technopark, Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. The company traces its history to 2004, when it began as a supplier of robotic technology; its own timeline notes that it was IBM's exclusive motor actuator supplier, with more than one million units delivered. In 2014 it delivered a remote-control system for a Korean Ministry of National Defense combat-robot programme led by a major defence contractor, and in 2016 it developed and commercialised capacitive six-axis force/torque sensors, which Korean press describe as the first commercial force/torque sensors of their kind made in Korea. The chief executive is Moon Hong-yeon, and the startup database THE VC lists 24 employees in 2026.
Robotous sensors use a capacitance-based, non-contact sensing structure. The company says this design resists wear and needs no external signal amplifier because the signal-conditioning electronics are built into the sensor. Trade coverage notes that vertical and horizontal forces are measured separately with brass and PCB-pattern electrodes and that assembly uses screw fastening rather than bonding or soldering, which suits automated production and keeps costs down. Developer support is provided for ROS 1 and ROS 2, with drivers published on the company's GitHub account.
The RFT product family is sold in five series. RFT40 is the most compact, a 40 mm diameter, 18.5 mm high, 60 g sensor rated at 100 N in Fx/Fy, 150 N in Fz and 2.5 Nm torque, intended for space-limited robotic systems and weight-sensitive drones. RFT44 is a dust-proof 44 mm sensor and RFT60 a 60 mm hollow-core sensor for cable routing. The flagship precision RFT64 series includes the dust-sealed RFT64-SB01 (150 N / 200 N / 4 Nm, 64 x 20 mm, 140 g, with RS232, RS422, USB, CAN and EtherCAT interfaces) and the high-performance RFT64-6A01 (200 N, 10 Nm, 300 percent overload capacity). The high-capacity RFT80 series includes the hollow-shaft RFT80-6A01 and the temperature-compensated RFT80-6A02 and RFT80-6A03 with embedded EtherCAT; the 6A03 is the highest-capacity model at 1,000 N and 50 Nm. The company names industrial robots, cobots, humanoids, medical robots, NDT inspection drones and industrial automation as target applications. It also offers customised sensor development and a haptic manual controller for the defence industry.
According to its milestones, Robotous began supplying a major NDT drone developer and a leading Korean medical-robot company in 2018; a leading Korean collaborative-robot maker, a global electronics manufacturer and a global carmaker in 2019; a Canadian AI and humanoid robotics company and a French medical technology company in 2023; and a leading German robotics company in 2024, when it also supplied an unmanned-vehicle controller for a Korean defence programme. In 2026 it started deliveries to a global healthcare technology company after testing that began in 2022, as well as to robotics companies in India and Vietnam. It reports more than 180 customers among robot makers, universities and research institutes in more than 25 countries. Sales partners include Light186 in Florida for the Americas and a Guangzhou trading company for China, and Korean press report a partnership with a Shanghai international cooperation centre for intelligent manufacturing and robotics. The company is unlisted; THE VC records a Series B round in September 2026 with Hyundai Corporation as a new investor, reported at 8.1 billion won.
