Company Overview

RoboCluster was a Danish national innovation network established around 2002, following a pivotal gathering of approximately 15 robotics professionals and researchers in Odense — an event widely credited with catalyzing Denmark's emergence as a globally recognized robotics hub. Operating under the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Research's innovation network program, RoboCluster received government funding to systematically strengthen Danish competencies in robotics, automation, and intelligent mechanical systems. Its core mission was to bridge the gap between industry and academia, facilitating collaboration among Danish companies, universities, and public institutions engaged in robotics research and commercialization.

RoboCluster's activities encompassed co-funding applied research projects, organizing industry networking events and conferences, supporting technology transfer between universities and small and medium enterprises, coordinating participation in international robotics programs, and representing the Danish robotics sector in EU and national policy discussions. The network cooperated closely with the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, which played a central role in training engineers and spinning out robotics companies. The Odense ecosystem that RoboCluster helped nurture grew to host more than 160 robotics companies employing approximately 3,600 people, making Odense one of Europe's densest per-capita robotics clusters and a global reference point for collaborative robot development, owing in large part to Universal Robots — itself a University of Southern Denmark spin-out.

In a major structural consolidation effective 1 January 2021, RoboCluster merged with the regional cluster organization Odense Robotics and the national drone cluster UAS Denmark to form a unified national cluster continuing under the Odense Robotics name, with regional hubs in Aalborg, Aarhus, Copenhagen, Odense, and Sonderborg. The original domain robocluster.dk no longer represents the organization; the successor entity operates at odenserobotics.dk. Note: an unrelated open-source Python library also named robocluster (documented at robocluster.readthedocs.io) provides a distributed robot communication framework and is not connected to this Danish organization.
