Delft radar maker spun out of TNO in 2010; its IRIS 3D drone radar and MAX bird radar count 800+ installs, incl. 100 IRIS for the Dutch MoD.
Robin Radar Systems B.V. is a Dutch maker of radar systems for detecting and classifying small flying objects, chiefly drones and birds, headquartered at Energieweg 1 in Delft. Its name is an acronym for Radar Observation of Bird INtensity, a project the Dutch research organisation TNO began in 1980 to reduce bird strikes on Royal Netherlands Air Force aircraft and which the European Space Agency later supported through its FlySafe initiative. Siete Hamminga, still chief executive, spun the technology out of TNO and registered the company in 2010.
Its counter-UAS product is IRIS, a 3D drone detection radar launched in 2020. IRIS is an X-band FMCW radar with 2 x 12 W output that rotates at 30 rpm for a one-second update and covers 360 degrees in azimuth and 60 degrees in elevation out to a 5 km instrumented range, in a unit 550 mm across and 630 mm high weighing 29 kg. Micro-Doppler signatures and a deep neural network separate rotor blades from birds, so the radar classifies both hovering multirotors and fixed-wing drones. A software-only Long-Range Mode switches the instrumented range to 12 km and is described by the company as detecting Shahed-type loitering munitions. IRIS can operate on the move from vehicles at up to 100 km/h or from ships, deploys in under 15 minutes, and passes tracks to command-and-control systems through an API to cue cameras and countermeasures. Its predecessor ELVIRA, a 2D drone radar, took the company into defence and security from 2016.
On the avian side, MAX is a 3D bird radar launched in 2017: X-band FMCW, 44 W, 60 rpm, 15 km instrumented range and 325 kg, supplied with Bird Viewer and Report Viewer software and a shutdown-on-demand plug-in that links to wind-turbine SCADA systems. Scarecrow, a UK bio-acoustic bird dispersal company acquired in 2021, adds dispersal and logging products for airports.
The Dutch Ministry of Defence ordered 100 IRIS radars, the largest contract in the company's history, and components of the US Department of Homeland Security selected IRIS for counter-UAS cover at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Organisations the company lists as customers or partners include Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, RAF Lossiemouth, the Royal Netherlands Air Force, Dedrone, Thales, Diehl, Kirintec, Equinor and Rijkswaterstaat. A US entity opened in 2024 and now operates from Sterling, Virginia. In 2024 the Dutch investment company Parcom reached an acquisition agreement with the shareholders, and the site describes Robin as a Parcom company.
The company reports a staff of more than 150 from over 35 nationalities, 29 registered patents and ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certification. RobotToday reported in October 2026 that it had opened a 9,000-square-meter headquarters in Delft for radar research, engineering, production and testing, citing more than 800 radars installed worldwide, 60% year-over-year growth over the past three years and a plan to employ more than 300 people by the end of 2026.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
360-degree 3D X-band radar that detects, tracks and classifies drones, also on the move, for counter-UAS networks.
3D bird and bat detection radar for airport bird-strike control and wind-farm environmental monitoring.
