Proxy (The Proxy Company) is a San Francisco, California-based digital identity and physical access control company founded in 2016 by CEO Denis Mars and CTO Simon Ratner. The company built a privacy-first, smartphone-powered universal identity signal platform leveraging Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and a patented tokenized access engine to enable employees, contractors, visitors, and tenants to access secured doors, elevators, and turnstiles without keys, cards, or badges. Proxy's universal identity protocol turns any mobile device or wearable into a frictionless, passive digital credential.
In April 2020, the company acquired Motiv — maker of the world's most popular smart ring — to bring biometric digital identity to wearables, enabling heart-rate and fingerprint-authenticated access directly from a smart ring. Enterprise customers included Vornado, Cloudflare, and Empire State Realty Trust. Proxy raised $42 million in a Series B round and $13.6 million in earlier funding.
In May 2023, Oura Health acquired Proxy in an all-equity deal valued at approximately $165 million, integrating Proxy's digital identity technology with Oura's biometric smart ring to expand into payments, security, and physical access applications.
