Probotics, a robotics unit of Swiss firm Bruggli Industrie, makes SCARABAEUS, a solar-charged RTK-GNSS tracked mulching robot for orchards.
Probotics is the robotics branch of Brüggli Industrie in Romanshorn, Thurgau, Switzerland. Brüggli is a training and integration enterprise, established as an association in 1987, that provides jobs and apprenticeships for people with physical and mental disabilities; its industrial arm also produces the Leggero bicycle trailer and 4pets dog transport boxes. Probotics was set up to launch SCARABAEUS, an autonomous orchard mulching robot developed with the Zurich design and engineering firm Tribecraft and assembled in Romanshorn.
SCARABAEUS is a 130 kg tracked robot with a 1.35 m working width and a lateral boom that reaches between tree trunks. It mows with five front discs and two boom motors, three blades per disc, to a cutting height of about 5 cm, leaving mulch in place between tree rows. It runs on lithium iron phosphate batteries with brushless DC motors and returns to a grid- or solar-powered charging station when charge falls to 20 percent; in solar mode it covers about 8 ha in 14 days, with higher output on mains power. Navigation uses multi-constellation RTK-GNSS (Galileo, GLONASS, GPS, BeiDou) with touch sensors, a compass and a gyroscope, and no camera or lidar; the robot learns trunks, obstacles and fences on its first run. Users set a driving strategy and geofence and follow the robot in the my SCARABAEUS app; it can also be driven by joystick and works on slopes. Field trials were carried out with BBZ Arenenberg and Swiss Future Farm in Thurgau, and the robot is sold through Agrar Landtechnik AG. The company cites ISO 9001 certification.
