Preh IMA Automation GmbH (PIA) was a German automation systems company headquartered in Bad Neustadt an der Saale, Bavaria, Germany. The company was formed in 2014 when automotive supplier Preh GmbH merged its in-house automation division (Preh Innovative Automation) with IMA Automation Amberg GmbH, a Bavarian special-purpose machine manufacturer with roots dating to 1972. This combined entity delivered flexible assembly lines, robot cells, and testing systems primarily for automotive suppliers and medical device manufacturers.
In April 2016, Preh IMA Automation acquired EVANA Automation, a Michigan- and Indiana-based automation specialist with 50 years of experience in special machine construction for automotive, industrial, and medical technology markets, operating it as Preh IMA Automation Evansville Inc. in Indiana. The Evansville division established a dedicated Healthcare division serving manufacturers of medical devices, diagnostic products, and pharmaceutical products, offering FDA-compliant and ISO 13485-certified automated assembly lines. The division's proprietary Exclusive Validation Process (EVP) helped manufacturers navigate regulatory requirements and accelerate time-to-market.
Product offerings included fully automated assembly systems, robot cells, cable confectioning systems, cam-controlled assembly machines, lean production systems, measurement and testing equipment, welding plants, rotary indexing systems, linear transfer assembly lines, manual workstations, and palletizing systems. Complete production lines covered automotive powertrain components, HMI systems, and electronics assembly.
In 2017, PIA Automation Holding GmbH was established in Frankfurt am Main to consolidate Preh IMA Automation and M&R Automation (Austria) under one structure. In 2018, the group rebranded to PIA Automation, with all entities adopting the unified brand. The holding company relocated its headquarters to Bad Neustadt a. d. Saale. The PIA Group now operates as a global provider of intelligent assembly and production automation across automotive, medical technology, and electronics sectors, with sites in Germany, Austria, USA, and China.
