Polaris Motion, the brand of Precision MicroDynamics Inc. (PMDi) headquartered in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, designs and manufactures high-performance motion control and data acquisition systems for machine tool and industrial automation applications. Its flagship Polaris UniverseOne motion controller is built around a multi-core Intel processor that performs smooth trajectory generation for multi-axis linear, circular and spline interpolation, and includes a full-featured G-code engine supporting 3-axis, 5-axis and 9-axis CNC machine configurations. The company's patented gigabit-per-second real-time network, Mercury, links the controller to servo drives, galvo scanner interfaces and I/O modules; each controller provides four ports, with each port supporting a daisy chain of up to 31 devices for a maximum of 124 devices per network. Multi-axis setpoint rates of 100,000 per second are readily achieved, and using the SYNC signal setpoint rates from 1 kHz through 200 kHz are supported across multi-axis machine configurations.
Polaris servo drives are available in linear and PWM types and control three-phase and single-phase rotary and linear BLDC motors, with advanced FPGAs enabling sophisticated servo feedback filter algorithms and automatic commutation through the MotionTools setup and tuning software. The systems are particularly suited to precision laser processing, CNC machining and high-throughput data-acquisition applications.
