Piezo Sonic Corporation is a Japanese motor manufacturer based in Ota-ku, Tokyo, founded in 2017. The company develops, manufactures, and sells Piezo Sonic ultrasonic motors, which are compact, high-torque, lightweight, and notable for a long service life that overcomes the short lifespan historically associated with ultrasonic motors. Compared with DC motors of the same size, Piezo Sonic motors can deliver roughly ten times more power.
Because the motors generate frictional force continuously, they hold their position even when unpowered or uncontrolled, providing high holding force without brakes, clutches, or gears, and they operate quietly. The LP series delivers high torque of around 1.2 N-m, with a higher-torque variant maintaining about 2.0 N-m of holding torque without power, control signals, brakes, or clutches, enabling robots and transfer equipment to hold posture and angle. A typical motor weighs about 250 g.
The company also pursued space applications, subjecting prototype ultrasonic motors to heat, vacuum, radiation-endurance, and simulated rocket-launch vibration testing to produce motors suitable for space rovers. Beyond motors, Piezo Sonic provides consulting and development services and builds autonomous mobile robots and IoT devices, including the Mighty series; the Mighty-D3 is smaller than an electric wheelchair yet can transport 30 kg of cargo and climb steps over 15 cm. Piezo Sonic's technology has been recognized with patents and awards, including the Monozukuri Award from the Japan Society for Precision Engineering in 2018 and a Good Design Award in 2019.
