Photonfocus AG is a Swiss manufacturer of CMOS image sensors, camera modules, and industrial cameras for machine vision, headquartered in Lachen, Switzerland. The company was founded in 2001 as a spin-off of the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM) in Neuchatel. Germany's ISRA Vision acquired Photonfocus in 2019; when Atlas Copco acquired ISRA Vision in 2020, Photonfocus became part of the Swedish group.
The company's core technology is LinLog, a patented pixel architecture that extends the dynamic range of CMOS sensors fitted with a global shutter, letting a camera record bright and dark regions of a scene, such as a weld arc next to a shadowed part, without saturation. Product lines built on this technology include GigE Vision area cameras, 3D cameras for laser-triangulation surface measurement, and hyperspectral and SWIR (short-wave infrared) cameras for material sorting outside the visible spectrum, plus board-level OEM camera modules for integrators. Sensor resolutions range from VGA to 12 megapixels, with GigE Vision and Camera Link interfaces and compliance with the GenICam standard.
Cameras from the company are used in semiconductor wafer inspection, food and pharmaceutical packaging checks, automotive part inspection, and inline 3D dimensional measurement. Photonfocus holds ISO 9001 certification and had about 50 employees at the time of the 2019 ISRA Vision acquisition.
