Company Overview

Obruta Space Solutions Corp. is a Canadian space technology company based in Ottawa that develops spacecraft autonomy systems for rendezvous, proximity operations and docking (RPOD). The company's work targets on-orbit servicing, orbital logistics and space debris removal. Its name comes from the Latin word for debris.

Obruta was founded on July 20, 2019, the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing, by Kevin Stadnyk (CEO) and Dr. Kirk Hovell (CTO). Both founders came out of the Spacecraft Robotics and Control Laboratory (SRCL) at Carleton University, where they worked under Prof. Ulrich on robotic technologies for space debris removal. Early work focused on computer vision sensing and on path planning and control algorithms for autonomous docking.

The company's first product is the RPOD Kit, a packaged system that equips a spacecraft for autonomous orbital docking. According to the company, the kit fuses data from the host spacecraft's existing sensors with its own navigation sensors, interfaces with existing spacecraft subsystems, includes built-in safe-abort logic and docking mission optimization, is compatible with most docking interfaces and with both chemical and electric propulsion, and improves fleet performance through software updates after each docking. The standard kit is designed for cooperative targets; uncooperative missions and robotic-arm operations are handled on request. Target use cases listed by Obruta include asset inspection, space situational awareness, orbital refueling, satellite life extension, orbital replacement unit swaps, end-of-life disposal and debris removal, orbit relocation, orbital manufacturing logistics and space station crew and cargo transport.

In October 2025 the Canadian Space Agency awarded Obruta CAD 1 million under its Space Technology Development Program for the project "Modular and Scalable RPOD System: Validation and Testing for Next-Generation Space Missions", intended to raise the RPOD Kit's technology readiness level and to support a new test facility that simulates space conditions. That project builds on a 17-month on-orbit software test campaign. Earlier, the company received a CSA contract to study the commercial feasibility of space debris removal technologies.

Obruta lists support from the Canadian Space Agency, the National Research Council Canada, Carleton University, ventureLAB, Creative Destruction Lab, Catalyst Accelerator, the HyperSpace Challenge, the Waterloo Velocity Incubator and Invest Ottawa (IP Assist program).
