Company Overview

NuPort Robotics, in Toronto, turns trucks a fleet already owns into autonomous vehicles by retrofit. Co-founders: CEO Raghavender Sahdev — NEXT Canada profile: a 2018 York University master's in computer vision-based robotics, then computer vision engineer at Huawei — and CTO Bao Xin Chen. TechCrunch lists it as "NuPort Inc" in the logistics and supply chain group of the 2026 Startup Battlefield 200, at nuport.ai.

The kit pairs customized hardware, which NuPort says fits all OEMs' trucks, with redundant sensors giving 360-degree coverage in an all-weather-proof enclosure. It says it has fitted Class 8 trucks from several major manufacturers and in 2025 began on yard (shunt) tractors. In September 2026 it branded its software NuDrive, an AI operating system for industrial autonomy spanning perception, fleet orchestration and remote oversight. Its rollout plan goes from one retrofitted truck to 25 per site.

It targets middle-mile and private-site freight on fixed routes — distribution-centre-to-rail shuttles, yards, mines, forestry roads — with a safety driver aboard. A two-year Canadian Tire pilot from March 2021 ran two retrofitted semi tractors between a Greater Toronto distribution centre and rail terminals within 20 km; Canadian Tire, NuPort and Ontario (via AVIN) each contributed about $1 million. NuPort also ran trucks on Toronto roads that year using NVIDIA DRIVE. Later work: zero- and low-emission truck data at the Port of Prince Rupert (2024); road-safety scenario testing at Area X.O, Ottawa; platooning and autonomous freight near the Blue Water Bridge, Sarnia (February 2025 to January 2026, with The Federal Bridge Corporation and OVIN support); and SAE Level 2 forestry hauling for FPInnovations at Domtar and Chantiers Chibougamau from December 2025.

CB Insights lists a 2021 seed round and convertible note, amounts undisclosed; other backing: government programmes and accelerators including Plug and Play, Berkeley SkyDeck and Innovate BC.
