MetraLabs GmbH Neue Technologien und Systeme is a German manufacturer of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) headquartered in Ilmenau, Thuringia. The company has more than 25 years of experience in mobile service robotics and employs a team of over 60 engineers and IT specialists. MetraLabs develops and builds all robots in-house at its Ilmenau facility.
In 2007, MetraLabs launched what it claims was the world's first interactive shopping robot, an achievement recognized with the Thuringian Research Award. Since then, the company has deployed more than 1,000 mobile service robots worldwide, which collectively have driven more than 1,000,000 km autonomously.
The core product portfolio is divided into two segments. For retail, MetraLabs offers the TORY® robot family: the TORY® POS performs in-store advertising via large front and rear LED screens, shelf scanning using high-resolution cameras and AI image analytics to detect out-of-stocks, price discrepancies, and planogram issues, and customer assistance via natural language AI; the TORY® RFID is an autonomous inventory robot for RFID-based stock counting, localization, and ERP integration; and the TORY® to go is a manually pushed RFID inventory device for smaller retail stores. The TORY® robot won the SHOP! D-A-CH Award Gold in the Innovation category (2025).
For intralogistics, MetraLabs offers the CARY® AMR family: CARY® up transports dollies, small load carriers (SLCs/KLTs), and similar cargo; CARY® flex is a flexible platform configurable for diverse transport tasks; and CARY® light is designed for KLT and small parts handling, targeting both SMEs and large enterprises.
The key technical differentiator is MetraLabs' proprietary in-house navigation software, which enables reliable autonomous operation in dynamic, unstructured environments including narrow passages. Robot safety drive control is certified by TÜV Thüringen in accordance with Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, Annex IV, No. 21, confirming that robots stop safely upon detecting any collision risk. MetraLabs is also a participant in the Thuringia Sustainability Agreement (Nachhaltigkeitsabkommen Thüringen) and emphasizes regional suppliers and e-mobility.
