American startup that built giant piloted combat robots for entertainment, including the iconic Eagle Prime Mk.III; ceased operations in 2019.
MegaBots Inc. was an American robotics startup founded in 2014 by Gui Cavalcanti, Matt Oehrlein, and Andrew Stroup, headquartered in Hayward, California. The company's mission was to create a spectator sport based on giant piloted combat robots, aiming to launch an international robot fighting league. MegaBots is best known for constructing the Eagle Prime (Mk.III), a 16-foot-tall, 12-ton, 430-horsepower piloted mech powered by a Corvette LS3 V8 engine.
In 2017, MegaBots staged a scripted giant robot duel against Japan's Suidobashi Heavy Industry on Twitch TV. The company struggled to secure sustainable revenue from the entertainment format, and by 2019 had exhausted its funding. MegaBots ceased operations in 2019, liquidating its assets including the sale of Eagle Prime on eBay.
