Orlando, Florida lidar maker founded 2012 (Nasdaq: LAZR); filed Chapter 11 in December 2025, and MicroVision acquired its Iris and Halo lidar assets in 2026.
Luminar Technologies was a lidar hardware and software developer founded in Orlando, Florida, in December 2012 by Austin Russell and Jason Eichenholz, going public via a SPAC merger with Gores Metropoulos in December 2020 under the ticker Nasdaq: LAZR. The company stopped operating as an independent lidar supplier in early 2026: after Volvo ended its sensor partnership in November 2025, Luminar filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2025, and MicroVision, Inc. acquired its lidar IP, inventory, staff, and contracts for 33 million dollars in cash through a bankruptcy auction that closed in February 2026.
Luminar's product line centered on 1,550-nanometer infrared lidar, a wavelength allowing higher optical power and longer range than the 905-nanometer lidar common in the industry, sold under the Iris and Halo model names to automotive and industrial customers; its Sentinel autonomous-driving stack was developed jointly with Volvo's Zenseact subsidiary. The Iris and Halo lines and their engineering teams now continue under MicroVision, which intends to integrate the acquired business into its own sensor portfolio.
Before the 2025 bankruptcy filing, Luminar had built partnerships with more than 50 companies, including Toyota Research Institute, Volvo, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Nissan, for production and pilot lidar deployments in passenger vehicles.
