It was established in 1948 as Finmeccanica, a mechanical-engineering subsidiary of the state-owned IRI holding group, and took the Leonardo name on January 1, 2017. The company is listed on Borsa Italiana under ticker LDO and is a constituent of the FTSE MIB index.
The group is organized into helicopters, aircraft, aerostructures, electronics, cyber and security, and space business lines, and holds stakes in joint ventures Telespazio, Thales Alenia Space, and MBDA. Its helicopter division has more than 4,500 aircraft in service across over 130 countries, the aeronautics business manages roughly 1,200 civil and military aircraft programs at about 50 sites, and its electronics unit has supplied more than 1,000 air defense and surveillance radar systems used in 58 countries. The space business builds satellites at a targeted rate of over 100 units a year, and the automation line has deployed over 30 kilometers of parcel and baggage sorting systems.
Leonardo operates roughly 180 sites worldwide and employed about 60,500 people as of 2024, when it reported revenue of 17.76 billion euros and net income of 1.16 billion euros. For the first half of 2026 the company reported new orders of 16 billion euros and revenue of 10 billion euros.
