Dutch maker of the E-Vario-Weeder, a 1.5-3 m camera-guided hoe whose deep-learning vision drives electric in-row blades in lettuce, endive and beet.
Lauwen Agro Engineering is a Dutch agricultural engineering company that describes itself as a specialist in hoeing technology for mechanical weed control. Its machine was developed by Eerke Lauwen.
The company's product is the E-Vario-Weeder, a camera-guided intra-row hoeing implement. Cameras record every plant in the field, and deep-learning algorithms distinguish crop from weed; each camera monitors two crop rows and controls two electrically driven hoeing modules, whose blades move in and out of the row to cut weeds close to the plants. The frame is modular, with working widths adjustable from 1.5 to 3 m, three to six intra-row hoeing modules on the rear frame, and row spacing from 20 cm. The machine can operate day and night. A supplied tablet app sets the safety zone, the minimum distance the blades keep from each plant, and a remote-service connection lets the support team diagnose problems. Crop algorithms are available for iceberg lettuce, endive, celery, cabbages, nursery crops and sugar beet, and new algorithms can be developed on request. The machine is ready for practical use in lettuce and endive, hoeing nearly the entire surface between and within the rows, and is included in the Future Farming smart-weeders buyers guide. Sales are supported through dealers.
