JdeRobot is a Spanish open-source robotics software project originating from the Robotics Group at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) in Madrid, Spain, led by Professor José María Cañas Plaza. The project develops and maintains a suite of open-source tools, libraries, and educational platforms for robotics, computer vision, and artificial intelligence, with the mission to foster robotics research and education worldwide.
JdeRobot provides a distributed, component-based programming environment in which robotic applications are composed of multiple concurrent asynchronous software components communicating via middleware. The framework supports programming in C++, Python, and JavaScript, and integrates tightly with the Robot Operating System (ROS) and simulation tools such as Gazebo and RViz. The architecture allows components to run across networked hardware, enabling distributed robotics applications for both research prototypes and educational exercises.
A central pillar of the JdeRobot ecosystem is the Robotics Academy, a web-accessible open-source platform providing a collection of hands-on robotics exercises for learners at all levels. Robotics Academy is entirely ROS-based and offers over 26 exercises covering topics such as autonomous navigation, computer vision, drone programming, and autonomous vehicles. All exercises are packaged into the Robotics Academy Docker Image (RADI) for easy deployment. The platform is used internationally in universities, secondary schools, and research programs.
JdeRobot's toolkit also includes BT-Studio, a visual programming tool for developing robot behavior using Behavior Trees, and VisualCircuit, which enables robot programming using connected block-based visual circuits inspired by electronic circuit design. These tools lower the barrier to entry for robotics programming and enable rapid prototyping of complex robot behaviors.
The project participates annually in Google Summer of Code (GSoC), mentoring student developers from around the world in contributing to open-source robotics software. JdeRobot is registered as a non-profit organization in Spain and operates under the GPL v3 open-source license.
JdeRobot's work spans robotics education, research in autonomous driving perception, drone navigation, deep learning for robot control, and home automation. It has authored numerous academic papers and has collaborated with industrial and institutional partners. The project continues to be an important bridge between academic robotics research and practical open-source tools for the broader robotics community.
