"Precise Handling Solutions"
German deep-tech spin-off of the Leibniz INM developing gecko-inspired, energy-free adhesive grippers for industrial automation, founded 2019.
INNOCISE GmbH is a deep-technology company headquartered in Saarbrücken, Germany, founded on May 27, 2019 as a spin-off of the INM – Leibniz Institute for New Materials. The company has established itself internationally as a technology leader for reversible adhesive gripping systems that require no compressed air, cables, or electronics. Rather than conventional vacuum suction cups, INNOCISE grippers rely on van der Waals intermolecular forces — the same physical principle that allows geckos to cling to surfaces — generating strong adhesion through close surface contact and releasing objects simply by reducing the contact area.
This so-called gecko-adhesion technology was pioneered at the INM before being commercialized by INNOCISE. The company positions itself as a provider of 'green' and energy-free gripping solutions that reduce compressed-air consumption and the associated carbon footprint compared to conventional suction grippers. INNOCISE serves a broad range of industries including electronics, optics, photonics, automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, life sciences, and packaging.
Specific applications demonstrated include pick-and-place of microLEDs, fuel cell membrane handling in cleanroom environments, and installation of side windows on railway vehicles. The company is also active in AI-integration through a research project called 'GecKI,' focused on AI-based object recognition and adaptive control for bioinspired robotic gripping systems within Industry 4.0 environments. INNOCISE works with industry partners including Schunk, Epson, ficonTEC, and Formhand, and is a member of the VDMA (German Machinery and Plant Engineering Association).
The team numbered over 10 members as of 2023. INNOCISE operates from a single office at Ursulinenstraße 35, 66111 Saarbrücken, Germany.
