Horizon Surgical Systems is a surgical robotics company spun out of UCLA in 2021, headquartered in Malibu, California. The company develops the Polaris platform — described as the world's first AI-supported and robotics-enabled surgical system designed specifically for ophthalmology. Led by CEO Jean-Pierre Hubschman, M.D. and CTO Jacob Rosen, Ph.D., the technology was incubated over more than 15 years at UCLA before commercialization.

The Polaris platform features microsurgical robotics engineered for the precision requirements of ocular surgery, with AI-based guidance to extend — not replace — surgeons' capabilities. In October 2025, Horizon completed the world's first cataract surgery performed using the Polaris platform, performed by Uday Devgan, M.D. The platform remains an investigational device not yet FDA-approved for commercial sale.

Horizon raised a $30M Series A round, supported by the Los Angeles venture ecosystem.
