"Smart. Practical. Sustainable."
Massachusetts maker of the HV-100, an autonomous robot that spaces and collects potted plants in nurseries, hoop houses and greenhouses.
Harvest Automation is a robotics company based in North Billerica, Massachusetts, founded in 2008 by robotics engineers to automate labour-intensive material handling in the nursery and greenhouse industry. Its robots are designed to work without programming or changes to existing infrastructure.
Its product is the HV-100, a small autonomous mobile robot that picks up, carries and places potted plants. Growers use it for spacing, consolidating and collecting containers in outdoor nurseries, hoop houses and greenhouses, tasks traditionally done by hand-carrying pots. The HV-100 measures 24 inches wide and 21 inches tall, weighs 100 lb, and handles containers from 5 to 12.5 inches in diameter, 5.75 to over 15 inches tall and up to 25 lb, in all common materials and shapes. Peak throughput is rated at 240 pots per hour under ideal conditions. It runs 4 to 6 hours per battery charge depending on terrain, uses quick-swap batteries for continuous operation, and is rated for 32 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit, day or night, in dirt, dust, rain and sprinkler irrigation. Robots work in teams that the grower configures for the desired spacing pattern.
Harvest Automation reports more than 200 HV-100 units deployed, with customers in North America, Europe and Australia. During a promotion in which it supplied robots to growers free of charge to space, consolidate or collect plants, the company reported that its fleet moved more than 5.4 million plants by the end of July. Named users in that programme included Altman Plants, Bailey Nurseries and Metrolina Greenhouses.
The company is venture-backed. In November 2013 it closed a US$11.75 million Series C led by Mousse Partners, with Life Sciences Partners, Cultivian, Founder Collective, Entree Capital and MassVentures participating, to commercialise the HV-100; John Kawola was CEO at the time. The company also uses the harvestai.com domain.
