"Revolutionizing Robot Dexterity and Empowering Human Work"
NSF Engineering Research Center developing versatile dexterous robot hands with AI-powered manipulation skills and human interfaces.
The Human AugmentatioN via Dexterity Engineering Research Center (HAND ERC) is a U.S. National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center headquartered at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Its mission is to develop easy-to-integrate, versatile dexterous robot hands that make robot manipulators useful out of the box, equipped with a growing library of AI-powered dexterous skills and intuitive interfaces that trained workers can use immediately. The center organizes research around three thrusts: robot hands (sensing, actuation and design), intelligent dexterity (simulation, AI, machine learning and control), and the human interface (multimodal interfaces, programming, and social, legal and industrial studies). HAND ERC supports application testbeds across the country targeting high-mix manufacturing, food preparation, caregiving and assistance, and high-consequence manipulation.
Core academic partners include Texas A&M University, Florida A&M University and Carnegie Mellon University, with additional faculty support from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Syracuse University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The center runs an innovation ecosystem for industry members and a membership program, plus workforce-development activities including Research Experience for Teachers (RET) and Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs. Stated goals include enabling individuals with motor impairments to live fuller lives, improving manufacturing job quality and worker productivity, addressing labor shortages and changing demographics, shortening supply chains, and broadening access to the benefits of robotics. HAND ERC welcomes companies, research labs, and civic, educational and advocacy organizations to join its mission to democratize the benefits of robotics through human augmentation via dexterity.
