Company Overview

EVK DI Kerschhaggl GmbH is an Austrian company founded in 1987 by engineers Peter Kerschhaggl and Kurt Völker — the initials of their surname giving the company its name (Electronic Völker Kerschhaggl). EVK is headquartered at Josef-Krainer-Straße 35, 8074 Raaba/Graz, Austria. Over more than 35 years of operation, EVK has established itself as a pioneer and world leader in hyperspectral imaging and sensor-based sorting and analysis systems.

EVK's core technical competence is the classification and analysis of materials using hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and inductive sensing technologies. The company's hyperspectral imaging cameras — primarily the HELIOS series — operate in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral range and are designed for inline industrial deployment, capturing detailed spectral data at high throughput speeds. These sensors enable non-contact, non-destructive identification of material composition and contamination across entire product streams. Complementary to hyperspectral cameras, EVK manufactures metal detection sensors that use inductive sensing principles to detect metallic contaminants, and sensor fusion systems that combine hyperspectral imaging and color camera data for more robust classification.

Primary application sectors for EVK systems include: recycling and waste management (sorting mixed plastics, separating materials by polymer type); mining and minerals (ore classification); food quality and safety (detection of foreign bodies, ripeness assessment, composition verification); pharmaceutical manufacturing (purity and composition verification); and chemical industry processing. A notable milestone was EVK receiving the Innovation Award in 2018 for its Quantitative Chemical Imaging (QCI) technology, which enables quantitative rather than merely qualitative spectral analysis.

In January 2025, EVK was acquired by and integrated into Headwall Group, a US-based global leader in high-performance spectral imaging solutions backed by Arsenal Capital Partners. As of the acquisition, EVK's technology and product lines continue under the Headwall Group umbrella, with the EVK brand maintained within Headwall's European operations. EVK is an EMVA (European Machine Vision Association) member. EVK's hyperspectral imaging sensors are directly relevant to robotic sorting and inspection systems, as these cameras are routinely integrated onto conveyor-based and robotic inspection platforms.
