Dutch agtech company building Croptiscan AI camera systems that detect PVY and leafroll virus in seed potato fields before symptoms are visible.
Croptimal is a Dutch agricultural technology company that develops image-recognition systems for the early detection of crop diseases, starting with seed potatoes. The systems are designed to find infected plants before symptoms become visible to the human eye, so that seed potato growers can remove diseased plants during field selection. The company says it is extending the technology to further crops, including sugar beets and onions.
The company operates from two Dutch locations: Wiltonstraat 11 in Assen and Fazantendreef 17 in Dronten. Croptimal was started by the team behind Doorgrond, a firm that supports precision agriculture innovations; Jeroen Wolters is the CEO and co-founder, and IT and electronics specialist Arnout van der Ploeg joined as a shareholder. The team includes software engineers, a data analyst, a mechanical engineer, a product specialist, R&D and quality control staff, and agrotechnology specialists.
The core product line is the Croptiscan. The Croptiscan 9000 is a self-driving selection robot that scans up to twelve crop rows at a time and gives growers real-time disease-pressure data per field location. The Croptiscan 9000 won the PotatoEurope Innovation Award and is operating at several growers in the Netherlands. A prototype of the system was shown in September 2024 at the Weddermarke Innovation Center in Groningen.
In September 2026 Croptimal launched the Croptiscan 3000, an entry-level, tractor-mounted version aimed at smaller seed potato growers. It has a 3-metre working width with a camera above each row and targets Potato virus Y (PVY) and potato leafroll virus. Trade press reported a working speed of 5 km/h (about 1.5 ha per hour, roughly 12 ha per working day), built-in light shielding for operation in bright sunlight or darkness, and a price of EUR 95,000 plus EUR 4,000 per year for service, support and algorithm updates. The detection algorithms were trained on data from seven operating Croptiscan machines and twelve separate camera arms. Owners can upgrade to self-driving configurations of 3 m (4 rows), 6 m (8 rows) or 9 m (12 rows).
Croptimal sells through its own team and a dealer network, and states that it works with growers, research institutions and breeders. In 2026 the company was nominated for a start-up award at the Aardappeldemodag potato industry event.
