"La performance de notre robotique collaborative et adaptative"
Cognitive Engines, a Cestas startup founded in 2019, builds cobot workstations driven by its own offline AI and 3D vision for picking and 100% quality checks.
Cognitive Engines is a French robotics software company based at the VDLV site in Cestas, near Bordeaux. Founded in 2019, it develops proprietary artificial intelligence and real-time 3D vision that let standard collaborative robots adapt to variable products and events on production lines, and it delivers this technology as complete cobot workstations for industrial and healthcare customers.
The company's AI is modelled on episodic and semantic memory and learns through reward-based feedback, so that a behaviour can be learned in a few rewarded trials. It can connect to thousands of digital signals and runs locally on PCs, Android tablets, phones and 32-bit microcontrollers, without an internet connection or remote server; Cognitive Engines presents this edge computing as proprietary and sovereign. In its workstations the AI combines 3D and 2D vision to interpret the scene, scripts the robot arm's trajectory in real time, adapts to changes in product size and conveyor speed, slows the robot according to the operator's distance and suspends motion when hands enter the work area. The company chooses the robot brand suited to each application and states that its workstations are CE certified, with risk analyses carried out with ergonomists and certification bodies. Workstations are designed for no-code use so production staff can change their behaviour without a site visit.
Applications include pick-and-place and AI-based quality traceability able to inspect 100% of products, with data stored locally or sent to an ERP. One published example is PICKY, a pick-and-place workstation that unpacks capacitors, replacing manual tweezer handling of tens of thousands of components for Exxelia. Customer logos on the website include VDLV, Boehringer Ingelheim, CEVA Sante Animale and KUKA Systems Aerospace. The team is led by Sebastien Lissarre (CEO/CTO) and Ulysse Michon (COO). The company is a member of clusters including Aquitaine Robotics, Aerospace Valley, Pole Pharma and Hub France IA, and it raised a 250,000 USD angel round from WeLikeAngels and Business Angels des Grandes Ecoles.
