Joint robotics research center of UPM and CSIC, founded 2009 in Madrid, Spain; 100+ researchers in field robotics, AI, and autonomous systems.
The Centro de Automatica y Robotica (CAR) is a joint research center established in November 2009 through a formal agreement between the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). The center operates across two sites: the primary CSIC headquarters in Arganda del Rey, Madrid, which houses specialized laboratories and outdoor experimental areas, and a secondary UPM site at the E.T.S. de Ingenieros Industriales in central Madrid. CAR employs over 100 researchers whose work spans five main areas: Field Robotics, Human-Centered Systems, Supervision and Control, Autonomy, and Artificial Intelligence.
The center conducts both fundamental and applied research, engaging in competitive national and EU programmes as well as bilateral industry contracts. Research output has direct applications in autonomous vehicles, rehabilitation robotics, agricultural robotics, and industrial inspection. CAR is affiliated with the Spanish CSIC network and listed in the ECHORD European robotics coordination hub.
