"Affordable Asymmetric Advantage"
Fyshwick, ACT maker of low-cost target drones and swarm ground control for counter-UAS training; reports 5,000+ military target systems sold.
Boresight Ltd is an Australian defence technology company headquartered in Fyshwick, in the Australian Capital Territory, that designs and builds low-cost uncrewed aerial systems used as aerial targets and threat emulators for counter-small-UAS training, testing and red-teaming. It also trades as Boresight UAS and Boresight Targets, and its earlier domain boresighttargets.com redirects to boresightuas.com. Its customers are government, military and security forces and the defence companies that develop counter-drone systems.
The product line centres on expendable target drones. The BQ400 is a cost-focused quadcopter target for a range of training and test scenarios. The BQ-750 Block 2 is the company's next-generation target, described as faster, longer-endurance and able to carry more payload than earlier models; listed payload uses are electronic warfare, shot detection and payload-delivery threat emulation. The BF-150 is described as a flexible loitering munition and emulating target, and an ASCA GP-UAS quadcopter is listed as coming soon. The aircraft are flown from Boresight's own ground control station running its Flight Management software, which lets one station control multiple targets in a single flight to present a swarm, while its mission planning software provides pre-defined flight profiles that can be stepped up in complexity. The company does not publish speed, endurance, weight or range figures for any airframe.
Media coverage collected on the company's news page reports more than 5,000 military target drone systems sold over five years, military customers in 11 Western armed forces including all four US services, and commercial customers including Northrop Grumman, Anduril, DroneShield, Nammo and a QinetiQ joint venture, with exports to the US, Canada, the UK and Europe. In August 2024 Australia's Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) selected Boresight, together with AMSL Aero and Grabba Technologies, after a fly-off under its Sovereign UAS Challenge; each signed a contract worth A$2.2 million.
Boresight was co-founded by Dr Alexander Hall, its chief technology officer, and Michael Sinkowitsch, a director. Justin Olde joined as chief executive in 2022 and now serves as managing director. In addition to the Fyshwick base it runs US operations at 201 Triana Blvd NW in Huntsville, Alabama, under general manager Steve Below, and has signed a three-year lease on an 812 square metre manufacturing facility there, about 15 times the size of its earlier US site. The company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange under the code BST through an A$8 million initial public offering priced at 20 cents per share.
