Vienna-based maker of AIRSKIN — a modular pressure-sensitive robot safety skin enabling fenceless human-robot collaboration; ISO 13849 PLe certified.
Blue Danube Robotics GmbH, trading publicly under the AIRSKIN brand, is a Vienna-based robotics safety technology company founded in April 2013. The company is headquartered at Ares Tower, Donau-City-Straße 11/15, 1220 Vienna, Austria, and employs approximately 30 people. The CEO is Andreas Baldinger, with Marco Meyer serving as Chief Operating Officer.
The company's sole but highly specialized product is AIRSKIN — a patented, modular, pressure-sensitive safety skin designed to be mounted directly onto industrial robots, collaborative robots (cobots), AGVs, and end-of-arm tooling (EOAT). AIRSKIN consists of air-filled, soft pads that continuously monitor pressure. Upon detecting any collision with a person or object, the system instantly triggers an emergency stop and the pad material simultaneously dampens the impact force, reducing injury risk.
AIRSKIN is designed to retrofit standard industrial robots for collaborative, fenceless operation without the need for light curtains or physical safety fencing. This approach can recover up to 90% of floor space previously consumed by safety barriers, while enabling human workers to operate in close proximity to robots running at speeds of up to 2 m/s and carrying payloads up to 300 kg. The pads are quickly installed — a snap-on system allows even untrained personnel to install AIRSKIN on a robot in under 30 minutes.
The AIRSKIN system holds ISO 13849 Cat. 3 / PLe safety certification and is designed for ISO/TS 15066-compliant human-robot collaboration applications. The AIRSKIN Safety Flange has received EC type-examination certification from TÜV AUSTRIA in accordance with EN ISO Performance Level e, Category 3, and EN/IEC 62061 SIL 2.
Blue Danube Robotics has received support from the European Commission's Horizon 2020 research framework (project ID 808534). The company's technology is distributed through automation partners across North America, Europe, and Asia.
