Company Overview

Bifrost AI is a simulation and synthetic data company for physical AI, the class of AI models that perceive and act in the real world, such as robot policies and autonomy stacks for vehicles, vessels and aircraft. The company was co-founded by Charles Wong (CEO), who previously worked on perception models for self-driving cars at nuTonomy, and Aravind Kandiah (CTO), who earlier built a medical AI system for detecting diabetic retinopathy. According to TechCrunch, the company was founded in 2020; its November 2024 funding announcement was datelined San Francisco, and the team works across the United States and Singapore.

The company currently markets two products. Manifold is a robot policy evaluation platform aimed at robotics research teams. It runs robot policies across simulator benchmarks, shards the runs across GPUs so that results return in minutes rather than days, breaks tasks into atomic subgoals, grades each rollout against custom rubrics, and uses agents to cluster and rank failure modes by their effect on performance. Bifrost says Manifold supports academic benchmarks such as LIBERO and RoboCasa and simulators including NVIDIA Isaac Sim and MuJoCo, and positions it as a sim evaluation platform that delivers insights in about 30 minutes.

Stardust is the company's synthetic data platform for perception and autonomy. Users describe a 3D scenario in plain language and receive fully labeled, sensor-matched data. The platform offers controllable physically based scenes with weather, fog, rain, snow, wind and night variations; sensor perturbation of noise, intrinsics and perspective to stress-test perception models; a Real2Sim pipeline that rebuilds failures seen in captured field footage as 3D assets for retraining; a neural rendering pass that adds sensor-like glare, grain and noise; and an asset library of more than 1,000 objects including vessels, buoys, aircraft, cranes and ports. Output is registered multi-modal data in RGB, infrared, depth and segmentation, with radar listed as coming soon, and an embedded Rerun viewer shows synchronized sensor streams. Demo use cases listed by the company include maritime domain awareness, USV navigation, UAV and counter-UAV perception, robotic manipulation, satellite and geospatial intelligence, and general robotics.

Bifrost's earlier platform was described in its 2024 announcement as a generative 3D data engine with a Python library for controlling 3D worlds from Jupyter notebooks. The company stated that it had worked with NASA JPL on data generation engines for Moon and Mars exploration, and with major U.S. government organizations and heavy-industry enterprises. Target sectors named in that announcement were aerospace, maritime, manufacturing and national security, and TechCrunch reported that the product is sold on annual subscriptions, primarily in the U.S. with growing traction in Japan.

In October 2024 Bifrost raised an 8 million US dollar Series A round led by Carbide Ventures, with participation from Airbus Ventures, Peak XV's Surge, Wavemaker Partners, MD One and Techstars, bringing total funding reported at the time to 13.7 million US dollars. Its website also lists Sequoia and Lux Capital among its backers. For the RobotToday landscape, Bifrost sits in the data, teleoperation and simulation segment as a provider of simulation-based evaluation and synthetic training data for robot learning and embodied AI.
