ATMOS Space Cargo GmbH is a German aerospace company that designs reusable capsules for returning cargo from low Earth orbit. It was founded in 2021 by Sebastian Klaus, Marta Oliveira, Jeffrey Hendrikse and Christian Grimm, and its team of more than 70 people from over 17 countries works between sites in Lichtenau, Germany, and Strasbourg, France.
The company's Phoenix orbital transfer and return vehicle carries a payload into orbit, operates there, and re-enters the atmosphere under an inflatable heat shield for recovery, supporting applications such as life-sciences research that require the payload to come back to Earth. In April 2025, ATMOS flew its Phoenix 1 capsule on a SpaceX Bandwagon-3 rideshare mission and completed a controlled atmospheric re-entry, which the company describes as the first such demonstration by a European company. A larger Phoenix 2 capsule is planned to carry payloads of up to 100 kilograms on missions lasting up to three months, and the European Space Agency has completed a design study covering an early phase of a further Phoenix 3 vehicle.
ATMOS has raised a 25.7 million euro Series A funding round from investors including the European Innovation Council, Balnord, OTB Ventures and Seraphim Capital, and has scheduled seven launches for 2026 through 2028.
