Astranis Space Technologies Corp. is an American satellite manufacturer headquartered at Pier 70 in San Francisco, California, where it designs, builds, and operates communications satellites in-house. The company was founded in 2015 by CEO John Gedmark and CTO Ryan McLinko and has raised more than $1.2 billion in funding through a Series E round.
Astranis builds small geostationary satellites under its MicroGEO platform, each weighing around 400 kilograms, substantially lighter than traditional GEO spacecraft, using software-defined radios that allow in-orbit reconfiguration of frequency, power, and beam patterns to deliver 10 to 12 gigabits per second of broadband throughput. Its first satellite, Arcturus, launched in April 2023 on a SpaceX Falcon 9. The company now has five GEO satellites in orbit and more than $1 billion in signed satellite-services contracts with customers including stc group in Saudi Arabia, Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan, Thaicom, and Anuvu.
Astranis also serves government customers directly: it has been selected as prime contractor for the U.S. Space Force's Protected Tactical SATCOM Global program and is partnering with the Space Force on the Resilient GPS satellite initiative. A follow-on satellite line, Omega, weighing approximately 600 kilograms and designed to deliver more than 50 gigabits per second per unit, is targeted for its first launches in 2026.
