Alion Energy is a Richmond, California-based company founded in 2008 that develops automated robotic technologies for utility-scale solar plant installation and maintenance. The company's flagship product, SPOT, is a patent-pending track-based autonomous cleaning robot for photovoltaic panels. SPOT uses a spinning brush and wiper system with a water tank to clean panels, and features a dry-cleaning mode for water-scarce conditions.
The robot is self-powered via an onboard solar panel that charges its battery system and can be remotely scheduled and activated via computer, tablet, or smartphone. SPOT reduces soiling-related energy output losses and delivers annual service costs of approximately $2,000 to $3,000 per megawatt installed. Alion Energy has also developed ROVER, a robotic installation technology.
The company has raised Series B funding from Bright Capital and RVC and has deployed systems at projects including a utility-scale installation in Chile.
