AcuSurgical is a French medical robotics company founded in 2020 in Montpellier and based at Cap Omega, Rond-point Benjamin Franklin. It develops robotics for ophthalmic surgery, focusing on vitreoretinal procedures such as the repair of retinal detachments and the treatment of macular diseases.
Its product, Luca, is described as the first bi-manual robotic platform for retinal surgery: a digital, tele-operated system that combines software with micro-precision robotics. The company says Luca is intended to give surgeons greater control and stability with micron-level precision and to support planning and decision-making during surgery, addressing hand tremor, fatigue, limited feedback and cognitive load in retinal procedures.
The project began with research led by ophthalmologists Prof. Philippe Gain and Dr. Gilles Thuret and robotics researchers Prof. Philippe Poignet and Prof. Yassine Haddab, after Christoph Spuhler, now CTO and co-founder, envisioned a robotic system for retinal surgery; all five are listed as co-founders. After building the first fully integrated Luca prototype, the team founded AcuSurgical, completed a Series A round, completed the first human clinical trial of Luca, and launched Luca V1.1. The company reports that Luca's first clinical study was published in the journal RETINA.
The management team is led by CEO Ronen Castro, with Arnaud Tellier (VP Product Strategy), Cecile Genevieve (R&D Director), Bertrand Bigay (CFO), Luc Demangeon (RA and QA Director) and Helene Lamielle (Chief Medical Officer). Pierre Billardon chairs the board, which also includes directors associated with Merieux Partners and Supernova.
