"Weaving the Future"
Tokyo-based, Toyota-owned developer of automated driving software and the Arene vehicle platform, with about 2,500 staff and Woven City test site.
Woven by Toyota, Inc. is the mobility software and technology company of Toyota Motor Corporation, which owns 100% of its common shares. Headquartered in the Nihonbashi Muromachi Mitsui Tower in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, it employs approximately 2,500 people and has US offices in Palo Alto (California), Seattle (Washington), Ann Arbor (Michigan) and Brooklyn (New York), plus an office in London. Hajime Kumabe is Representative Director and CEO. The company profile lists three major businesses: the Arene software platform, automated driving technologies, and Toyota Woven City, a test course for mobility.
The organisation traces back to Toyota Research Institute-Advanced Development (TRI-AD), set up in March 2018 to develop and deploy automated vehicle technology. TRI-AD was expanded into Woven Planet in January 2021, and the current company was established in April 2023 under the Woven by Toyota name; it became a member of the Toyota Group in February 2024. Along the way it absorbed several automated driving teams: Lyft's Level 5 self-driving division (July 2021), the HD mapping company CARMERA (August 2021, folded into an Automated Mapping Platform team), Renovo Motors (September 2021) and the automated driving software unit of Toyota Research Institute (May 2022).
Automated driving is developed as a full-stack, production-grade system. The company describes a layered architecture in which an AI decision-making model generates continuous driving decisions while a separate safety framework, based on local driving rules and Toyota safety principles, enforces validated constraints. A proprietary Active Learning Loop collects sensor and system data from Toyota vehicles across regions and model years, mines rare and long-tail scenarios into a driving scene database, retrains models and delivers updates over the air. The same stack is shared across assisted (ADAS) and automated driving products, and is designed to run within production limits on compute, memory, sensors and diagnostics. Internal tooling combines data analysis, simulation, validation and deployment in one workflow.
Arene is a platform for building vehicle software, made up of Arene SDK (shared APIs and frameworks for interacting with vehicle systems), Arene Tools (collaborative workflows, virtual test environments, simulation and software-in-the-loop verification) and Arene Data (privacy-first fleet data pipelines). Arene and enhanced ADAS technologies launched in production in Toyota's all-new RAV4 in May 2025.
Toyota Woven City, in Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture, was jointly developed with Toyota and officially launched in September 2025 as a living laboratory for testing mobility products with residents. By September 2026 about 30 proof-of-concept trials were running with roughly 160 resident participants in 80 households, and 31 companies had joined as Inventors, including the AI Robot Association, which has tested household support robots in 11 homes. Woven by Toyota develops the Woven City Integrated ANZEN System, which combines data from people, vehicles and infrastructure for accident prevention, and the Woven City AI Vision Engine, a vision-language model that describes real-world events in natural language; version 2.0 is scheduled for release by the end of 2026. In September 2026 the company signed a partnership agreement with Shizuoka Prefecture to extend ANZEN System trials to prefectural government vehicles and run mobility service trials around Mishima.
