Company Overview

WHILL Inc. is a Japanese personal mobility technology company founded in 2012 by Satoshi Sugie (formerly Nissan automotive design), Junpei Naito (Sony R&D), and Muneaki Fukuoka (Olympus medical equipment R&D). The company is headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, with strategic offices in the United States (San Mateo, California), Canada, China, and the European Union. As of September 2024, WHILL has approximately 350 employees on a consolidated basis.

WHILL designs and manufactures personal electric vehicles (power chairs) and provides autonomous mobility-as-a-service solutions for airports, hospitals, theme parks, cruise ships, and convention centers in approximately 30 countries. The flagship consumer product is the WHILL Model C2, a portable personal electric vehicle featuring patented omni-directional front wheels that allow turning within a 60 cm radius, enabling navigation through tight indoor environments. A Model C2 High Back variant is also offered.

The WHILL Model Ci2 is a compact travel power chair designed for indoor and indoor-outdoor use. WHILL's Autonomous Service is a self-driving fleet management platform that enables unmanned or attendant-assisted mobility routing within indoor venues. WHILL is recognized as the first company to deploy a commercial autonomous last-mile transportation solution at airports.

Autonomous WHILL services are operational at Haneda Airport, Narita Airport, and every major airport in Japan, as well as at Rome's Fiumicino International Airport (FCO) as of March 2025. Over 700,000 autonomous rides have been completed worldwide. WHILL received a CPSC safety recall notice in 2020 regarding personal electric vehicles.
