Universite Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) no longer exists as a separate institution: on 1 January 2018 it merged with Paris-Sorbonne University to form Sorbonne Universite, a multidisciplinary research university in Paris, France organized in three faculties covering arts and humanities, health sciences, and science and engineering. The university reports about 55,000 students, 3,800 doctoral candidates, 145 research units and 23 doctoral schools.
Robotics research is concentrated at the Institut des Systemes Intelligents et de Robotique (ISIR), joint research unit UMR 7222 operated by Sorbonne Universite, CNRS and Inserm on the Campus Pierre et Marie Curie at 4 Place Jussieu. ISIR organizes its work around two axes, engineering of intelligent systems and intelligent systems for health, and five teams: ACIDE, ASIMOV, IRIS, MLIA and RPI-Bio. Its stated research challenges are machine autonomy and interaction with humans. Recent outputs include LEGMIO hands-free crutches, which won a gold medal at the 2026 Concours Lepine, assistance arms mounted on wheelchairs, and the HAHA (Hypertrophic Ambidextrous Hand and Arm) built for a collaboration with performance artist Stelarc. The institute takes part in the euROBIN European robotics network.
