The University of Sydney, founded in 1850, is Australia's oldest university and is based in Sydney, New South Wales. Its Faculty of Engineering houses the Australian Centre for Robotics, established in 1999 as the Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) and later renamed to reflect a broadened research scope beyond outdoor field environments.
The centre works on autonomous systems across mapping and scene understanding, network systems, planning and control, and sensing and perception, with applications in agriculture, forestry, transport, marine systems, and security. Professor Ian Manchester currently directs the centre, which for many years was closely associated with Professor Salah Sukkarieh's work on agricultural and field robotics. The centre has also functioned as a partner node within the ARC Centre of Excellence for Autonomous Systems, alongside the University of Technology Sydney and the University of New South Wales.
Research staff include academic faculty, research fellows, and postgraduate students working on projects such as autonomous underwater vehicles, orchard and broadacre farming robots, and mining automation systems.
