Temposonics is a magnetostrictive linear position sensor brand with a history dating to 1975, when physicist Jacob Tellerman first applied the magnetostrictive principle to linear position measurement and founded Temposonics Inc. in Plainview, NY. The company was subsequently acquired by MTS Systems Corporation, which operated the business as its MTS Sensors Division. In April 2021, Amphenol Corporation (NYSE: APH), a global leader in high-technology interconnect, antenna, and sensor solutions, completed the acquisition of MTS Systems Corporation, bringing the sensor business into Amphenol's portfolio. The MTS Sensors Division was subsequently rebranded to its original name, Temposonics.
Today Temposonics LLC operates its US headquarters and primary manufacturing facility at 3001 Sheldon Drive, Cary, North Carolina 27513 — a 55,000 sq ft facility that has served as the production site since 1988. European operations are managed by Temposonics GmbH & Co. KG, based in Lüdenscheid, Germany.
Temposonics manufactures absolute, non-contact magnetostrictive linear position sensors across several product families:
- R-Series V: The flagship industrial line, featuring rod (RP) and profile extrusion (RH) housings for harsh industrial conditions. The rod housing withstands high hydraulic pressures for cylinder-integrated measurement; the profile extrusion housing provides flexible external mounting. R-Series V includes smart diagnostics for condition monitoring.
- R-Series V FLEX: Designed for confined spaces and capable of stroke lengths up to 20 meters.
- E-Series (EH): Rod-and-cylinder sensors rated for high temperatures and hazardous areas, certified to ATEX, IECEx, CEC, and NEC standards.
- MH-Series (Embedded, Compact, FLEX, Redundant): Dedicated to mobile hydraulics applications, measuring absolute piston position inside hydraulic cylinders on construction, agricultural, and industrial machinery. MH-Series sensors support CANbus, analog, and start/stop outputs.
The sensors cover measuring ranges of 25 mm to 20,000 mm with outputs including PROFINET, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, POWERLINK, SSI, IO-Link, CANbus, and analog interfaces. They operate reliably in extreme temperatures, high humidity, and continuous shock and vibration environments.
Temposonics sensors are used in industrial robots and actuators for precise position feedback, hydraulic cylinder control in presses and injection molding machines, mobile machinery steering and leveling systems, and precision test and measurement equipment.
