Company Overview

"TARS, known in China as Tashi Zhihang, is an embodied-AI and robotics company based in Shanghai. Its registered entity is Shanghai Tashi Zhihang Technology Co., Ltd., and the company was formally established in February 2025. It was founded by Chen Yilun, who serves as CEO and previously held senior roles in autonomous driving at Huawei and machine vision at DJI; Li Zhenyu, chairman and former president of Baidu's Intelligent Driving Group; and Ding Wenchao, chief scientist and a former Huawei researcher. The company states that more than 80 percent of its staff work in R&D and that the team has published over 40 robotics papers.

TARS develops a full stack that covers data collection, a foundation model and robot hardware. Its AWE (AI World Engine) model is trained on human-centric real-world data; AWE 3.0 was presented in March 2026 with vision, tactile and action inputs, and AWE 3.5 was introduced at WAIC in July 2026, where AWE received a SAIL Award. SenseHub is a wearable system of cameras and gloves that records vision, touch, action and language while people work. The WIYH (World In Your Hands) dataset and its Oracle Suite collection kit were released openly, with over 1,000 hours of manipulation data. On the hardware side, the A1 robot carries the 21-degree-of-freedom DexHand, a human-scale hand with micro-cameras and elastomer tactile sensors, shown at ICRA 2026. In March 2026 the A1 set a Guinness World Record for the most sub-millimeter wire harness assemblies in one hour, with 105 completed.

The first target is flexible industrial assembly, especially automotive wiring harnesses. At WAIC 2026 TARS showed a recreated wiring-harness production line using several A1 robots and said it is working with Shanghai's Jiading District toward a cluster of about a thousand industrial embodied robots. The A1 was also shown at LogiMAT, where press reports say buyers from several industries and European countries expressed interest; no customers have been named. Funding has been reported as an angel round of about US$120 million in March 2025 led by BlueRun Ventures and Qiming Venture Partners, an angel-plus round of about US$122 million in July 2025, and a Pre-A round of about US$455 million announced in April 2026, led by Hillhouse and HongShan with Meituan Strategic Investment taking part."
