Company Overview

STMicroelectronics N.V. (ticker: STM) is a global independent semiconductor company headquartered at 39 Chemin du Champ-des-Filles, Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva 1228, Switzerland. Founded in 1987 through the merger of Thomson Semiconducteurs of France and SGS Microelettronica of Italy, ST designs, develops, manufactures, and markets a broad portfolio of semiconductor integrated circuits and discrete devices. The company reported revenue of approximately $11.8 billion USD in 2025 and employs roughly 49,000 people worldwide.

For robotics and industrial automation, ST is most notable for two product families. The STM32 microcontroller series—based on ARM Cortex-M cores and available in hundreds of variants—is a de facto standard in embedded motor control, offering 32-bit compute, floating-point units, hardware PWM timers, and encoder interfaces suited to servo loops. The STM32 Motor Control SDK provides field-oriented control (FOC) firmware for PMSM and BLDC motors. The STSPIN motor driver IC family (including STSPIN32F0, STSPIN32G0, STSPIN32G4) integrates gate drivers and an STM32 microcontroller in a single System-in-Package, simplifying three-phase inverter design for battery-powered robots, AGVs, cobots, and power tools. Gate drive voltages span from 45 V to 600 V, covering low-voltage mobile robots through high-voltage industrial drives.

Beyond motor control, ST supplies MEMS sensors (IMUs, accelerometers, gyroscopes) under the LSM and ISM series widely used in robot perception; ToF ranging sensors (VL53 series) used in obstacle detection; and STM32-based safety MCUs certified to IEC 61508 SIL 2/3 for functional safety in collaborative robots. ST holds ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 quality certifications company-wide and achieved ISO 22301 business continuity certification in 2016.

ST operates wafer fabrication facilities in Crolles (France), Catania (Italy), Agrate Brianza (Italy), and Singapore, with back-end assembly in Morocco, Malaysia, China, and the Philippines. The company is dual-listed on the NYSE and Euronext Paris. Its customers span automotive OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers, industrial equipment makers, consumer electronics brands, and robotics manufacturers across more than 200,000 customers globally.
