"The Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL) is the artificial intelligence research laboratory of Stanford University, housed in the Gates Computer Science Building in Stanford, California, United States. Founded in 1963 by John McCarthy, the lab has been directed since 2025 by Carlos Guestrin, Fortinet Founders Professor of Computer Science, who succeeded Christopher Manning (director 2018 to 2025). SAIL is an academic unit within Stanford's Computer Science Department and School of Engineering rather than a company.
Research is organized around faculty-led groups in machine learning systems and algorithms, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing and computational social science, robotics and AI safety, trustworthy machine learning for healthcare and neuroscience, and datasets and foundation models. Roughly 25 faculty members are listed across these areas, together with postdoctoral fellows and affiliated centers, and the lab teaches courses and runs outreach programs. Faculty honors reported for 2024 and 2025 include the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering to Fei-Fei Li and PECASE awards to Chelsea Finn and Dorsa Sadigh.
SAIL is distinct from the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI), with which it co-hosts fall conferences."
