Company Overview

Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SHLAB) is a national AI research institution founded in 2020 and headquartered at 129 Longwen Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai (International Media Port, Building L1). It conducts strategic, original, and forward-looking research in AI foundation models, embodied intelligence, AI safety, and AI for Science, aiming to become a globally recognised source of original AI theory and technology. The lab's primary research platform is the InternLM / (Shusheng) series.

Intern-S1 is a science-domain multimodal large model ranked the best-performing open-source model across text and multimodal scientific tasks. Intern-S2-Preview (35B parameters) achieves science capability approaching trillion-parameter models. Intern-S1-Pro uses a MoE architecture with 512 experts, 1 trillion total parameters, and 22B activated parameters per call. For robotics and physical AI, the lab maintains Intern-Robotics, an end-to-end embodied intelligence engine covering simulation, data generation, training, and physical deployment — designed to address the entire pipeline from raw data to real-world robot operation.

Additional platforms include Intern-Discovery (AI-assisted scientific discovery with specialist agents and lab equipment integration), Intern-SafeWork (AI safety stack), OpenCompass (LLM evaluation benchmark, 13k GitHub stars), InternVL (vision-language model, 9.4k stars), MinerU (document parsing, 48.7k stars), LMDeploy (model serving, 7.2k stars), and XTuner (fine-tuning toolkit, 5k stars). The lab runs joint PhD training programmes starting from 2022 with over ten leading Chinese universities including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
