Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) is a marine and earth science research institution founded in 1903 and part of the University of California, San Diego, based in La Jolla, California. Its researchers study ocean physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and climate, and it maintains the Keeling Curve record of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Scripps deploys autonomous underwater vehicles and surface robots for ocean science. In March 2021, Scripps researchers used a REMUS 6000 and a Bluefin AUV to survey more than 36,000 acres of seafloor off Los Angeles at depths up to 900 meters, finding more than 27,000 barrel-like targets and over 100,000 debris objects linked to historical DDT dumping. Separately, Scripps worked with UC San Diego's Computer Science and Engineering department on miniature autonomous underwater explorers, grapefruit-sized floats that adjust buoyancy to drift with currents; a swarm of 16 was deployed off Torrey Pines, tracking position every 12 seconds by acoustic signaling to study how plankton form dense patches.
In fiscal year 2020, Scripps entered a 10-year unmanned-systems partnership with NOAA's Office of Marine and Aviation Operations to develop uncrewed surface vessels carrying meteorological and oceanographic sensors, deployed along the historic CalCOFI survey lines extending 200 nautical miles off the Southern California coast.
