ScoutDI AS is a Norwegian drone technology company headquartered in Trondheim, Norway, specializing in fully digitalized inspection systems for confined industrial spaces. Founded in 2017 as an outgrowth of advanced robotics and cybernetics PhD research at NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), ScoutDI has developed a proprietary tethered drone platform designed to eliminate the risk and cost of manned entry inspections in GPS-denied environments such as storage tanks, pressure vessels, ship holds, wind turbine towers, and tunnels.
The company's flagship product, the Scout 137, is now in its third generation (Gen 3, launched 2025). The tether carries both power and data over a fully wired connection, enabling unlimited flight time without battery constraints or RF signal loss risk. The Gen 3 system integrates a 128-beam Ouster 3D LiDAR with edge-based SLAM on an NVIDIA computer for rock-solid navigation and live point-cloud generation. A 3.5x optical zoom camera with autofocus and powerful LED lighting ensures high-detail visual capture even in restricted-access areas.
A key differentiator is the Scout UTM Payload, unique in the inspection drone market: it combines surface spot-preparation (cleaning), couplant supply, and ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) in a single payload, cutting UT inspection time in half compared to conventional methods. The Gen 3 also supports a Gas Sensor payload for continuous safety monitoring during flight.
ScoutDI's Scout Portal provides cloud-based data management, including interactive 3D review with flight path, points of interest, and UTM data, plus live streaming and remote collaboration features for off-site experts.
The company is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 27001, and the Scout 137 and Ground Station carry CE marks. Backed by strategic investors including Equinor Ventures and DNV (which joined as owners in 2021), ScoutDI serves major energy and industrial clients including Shell, Ørsted, Aker BP, and IKM Testing.
